As I sit here, reflecting on the journey of writing “Enfired,” I can’t help but be amazed by how this story evolved from a simple idea into a complex tapestry of faith, love, and corporate intrigue. Ready to learn more? Grab your coffee (or pineapple juice, if you’re feeling adventurous) and let me spill some secrets about my latest novella. But first, let’s start with a brief story overview.
"ENFIRED" - Essential Story Overview
1. Basic Info
Genre: Contemporary Christian Romance
Length: ~20,000 words (short novel/novella)
Setting: Douala, Cameroon
Time Period: Modern day
2. Main Characters
Keila Nkeng: 28, Senior Marketing Executive at Global Bridge Investments (GBI). Ambitious, principled, caught between compartmentalizing her career and faith life.
David Samba: New Strategic Partnerships Director at GBI. Educated abroad, more faith blended approach to life, brings expertise in ethical investment.
3. About the Story
Keila thought she had it all figured out—until her investment firm's dark secrets threatened everything she believed in. Now, with only her cryptic new colleague David by her side, she must choose between the career she's built and the communities she can't abandon. A clean romance where love and justice burn equally bright.
1. Writing My Home
Setting “Enfired” entirely in Douala (economic capital of my home country, Cameroon) was intentional. I wanted readers to experience the morning dew, the intricate roadways, the yummy food, or the mix of French and English.
2. The Joy of Genre-Blending
“Enfired” refuses to be boxed into one category. It’s romance, yes, but also social commentary, spiritual journey, and corporate thriller. This reflects how life actually works—we don’t box our experiences into neat genres.
3. The Title & Chapters Have Multiple Layers of Meaning
“Enfired” isn’t just about being set ablaze—it’s about transformation through trial. The fire metaphor runs throughout the story, representing both destruction and purification. Think of it as the opposite of being “uninspired.”
Embers, Kindling, Smoke, Blaze, Conflagration, Crucible, Purification, Rekindled, Forged—each chapter title is fire-related and reflects the stage of transformation the characters experience. It was like orchestrating a symphony in nine movements.
4. Real Issues, Fictional Solutions
Environmental corruption is heartbreakingly real. I wanted to shine a light on these problems while still delivering the escapism romance readers crave. Finding that balance required multiple rewrites and lots of sensitivity reading.
5. Food and Culture Add Flavor
From pepper soup to puff-puff, I included details about Cameroonian cuisine and customs. These small touches ground the story in its setting and add sensory richness to the narrative.
6. The Supporting Cast Steals Scenes
Characters like Priscilla (the best friend with zero filter) and Claude (the wise security guard) took on lives of their own. Pastor Emmanuel evolved from a background figure into a spiritual anchor for the story. Even the antagonists have moments of humanity.
7. It’s Short But Packs a Punch
At about 20,000 words, “Enfired” packs a full emotional journey into novella length. Perfect for those “I need to finish this story tonight” moments. Sometimes the most powerful fires burn bright and fast.
